Barça's fair play balance is reportedly positive, and they still have to sell before they can sign in January

The club is reportedly unable to register winter signings without moving players out first, and no names, no targets and no figures have been attached to any of it.

The reported position on Barcelona's January window comes down to a sequence rather than a sum: sell first, sign second.

One report has it that the club would need to complete outgoing deals before it can register incoming ones in the winter market. Not agree them. Register them, which is the part that determines whether a signing is a player or a press release.

The same report says Barça's financial fair play balance is positive.

Read those two lines back to back and the shape of the thing becomes clear. A positive balance is not, on this account, the same as room to work. It is a state of health that still leaves the club needing a departure before a squad list can grow.

That distinction is the whole story, and it is the kind of distinction Spanish football has spent several seasons learning to live with. Clubs do not fail to sign players in January because they cannot find them. They fail because a name cannot be lodged with the competition until the space exists.

What the report does not contain is anybody's name.

No player is identified as a candidate to leave. No incoming target is named. No figures are attached to the fair play balance beyond the assertion that it is positive.

So there is no fee to examine, no clause to weigh, no wage bill to subtract. There is a mechanism and a condition, and the condition has no faces in it yet.

That absence is worth sitting with, because it is what separates this from the usual September noise about January. A rumour normally arrives with a player attached. This one arrives with an accounting sequence attached instead, which is less exciting and considerably more binding.

It also means the scale of the required sales is unknown. One departure or several, a first-team regular or a squad player, a sale or a loan with wages covered: none of that is in the reporting.

There is a long way between now and the window opening. The report dates from September. The market it describes does not open until January, and a squad's needs in January are rarely the ones it thought it had in autumn.

What can be said is that any winter business would reportedly be conditional. The signing follows the sale. If the sale does not happen, on this account, neither does the registration.

Everything above rests on a single report, and it should be read that way. One outlet's confidence is not the same as confirmation, and Barcelona have not, in anything available here, set out their own position on what January requires.

For now the club's own numbers are said to be in credit and its hands are said to be tied anyway. That is an unusual combination, and it is the most specific thing anyone has put on the record about Barcelona's winter.
